Can Animals Pick Up an Accent?    [02-03-2012]

Everyone has a different voice and accent. Some people have stronger accents according to their regions. For example, people living in Seoul and Busan speak differently, and they have different accents. But what about animals? Are they also able to develop accents?

Scientists believe that some mammals, including elephants and dolphins, are able to pick up an accent. Recently, British researchers found that goats can develop their own accents, too!
According to the researchers from Queen Mary University of London, goats can develop an accent depending on their surroundings.

The researchers looked at four groups of goats. All of them were siblings or half siblings. They monitored the animals when they were one week old.
The goats were monitored again at five weeks old when they formed larger social groups with other animals.

The study found that the goats¡¯ accents changed as they grew older and moved in different groups. ¡°If goats can do it, maybe most mammals can pick up an accent from their surroundings,¡± said Dr. Elodie Briefer, who led the study. ¡°Maybe all mammals accents can be affected by their surroundings.¡± So, if you have a chance, listen to animals¡¯ accents carefully and try to tell the differences!
