We use escalators very often in our daily lives. We can see them everywhere from subway stations to department stores and airports. They make our lives more convenient. In fact, we cannot imagine a life without escalators anymore! However, you have to be careful when using them. Many children all over the world get involved in accidents while riding escalators. In fact, you can get seriously hurt on an escalator if you are not careful. This week, let¡¯s learn some important escalator safety guidelines.

An escalator is a moving staircase with steps that move up or down using a conveyor belt. An American man named Jesse Reno designed the first escalator in 1892. At the time, he called it a ¡°moving stairway.¡± Then, in 1899, the first escalator was built in a shopping center. People were very surprised to see the moving stairs!

Today, escalators are everywhere and they are more common than elevators. Escalators are very convenient and they are the most efficient form of vertical transportation available today. An escalator can move 4,000-7,000 people in an hour.

Many children also use escalators frequently. However, you have to be very careful when riding them. Sometimes, serious accidents happen on escalators. Therefore, you need to learn guidelines on escalator safety.

Before you get on an escalator, check your shoes first. Do not ride with untied shoelaces. It can lead to a serious accident. Also, if you are wearing loose or long clothing, hold them carefully. Then, step on the escalator carefully and keep a firm grip on the handrail.

When riding the escalator, stand facing forward. Hold on to the handrail to keep your balance. Most accidents occur as a result of falling. Never run on an escalator. Never ride on the handrail, either. Stand upright and don¡¯t lean on the side of the escalator or sit on the stairs.

Stay clear of moving parts and keep loose or long clothing clear of the sides. If your clothing or feet get caught in the moving parts of the escalator, it can cause a dangerous accident. In case of emergency, push the STOP button at the top or the bottom landings of the escalator.
