It¡¯s
summertime in Korea and in
many other countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Interestingly, however, the
season is opposite in the Southern Hemisphere. Now,
it is wintertime in Australia and
New Zealand. This means that these countries
in Oceania celebrate Christmas in the
summertime!
Last week, it snowed a lot
in New Zealand due to a cold blast from the Antarctic. The country¡¯s
capital city of Wellington received snowfall for the first time in 40
years! Many children were happy to see the snow. They played in the
snow with their friends while making snowmen. Some children also enjoyed
snowball fights.
However, the
heavy snow caused many problems in the
city. The airport in Wellington was
closed. Also, roads became slippery and cars had to
spend the night on the side of the road. Some schools and companies
were even forced to close. In the city of Christchurch, hundreds of homes suffered
from power failure due to strong winds and heavy snow.
According to the country¡¯s
Civil Defence´ºÁú·£µå ¹Î¹æÀ§ º»ºÎ, more snowfalls are expected. ¡°People need
to be prepared for more snow. They have to make sure to have warm clothing, proper food, and water,¡±
said Rian vanSchalkwyk, New Zealand Civil Defence Officer. Let¡¯s hope
it stops snowing there! |
