Scottish marine biologists at the University of St. Andrews recently studied the sounds bottlenose dolphins made. They found that the dolphins use whistles to say hello to their friends. The researchers studied the sounds at St. Andrews Bay, off the northeastern coast of Scotland. They used a special tool to record their whistles. “When groups of dolphins met up, they swapped whistles that outwardly sounded the same,” said one of the researchers Nicola Quick. “In fact, the whistles are individual signatures. Signature whistle exchanges are an important part of a greeting process that allows dolphins to identify members of the same species when meeting them in the wild.” Their whistles play important roles in the sea. This is because they communicate with each other through whistles. Whistles are often used as an agreement signal to hunt together for food.
