I Will Set Another New World Record!    [23-03-2012]

Not everyone can hold a Guinness World Record. It takes a lot of time, talent, and effort to be number one in something. For example, 45-year-old Sarwan Singh, who holds the record for longest beard - 1 meter and 89.5 centimeters - has never shaved in his life. Likewise, Rolf Buchholz from Germany didn¡¯t become the world¡¯s most pierced man overnight. It took 11 years and 453 piercings - 127 of which are located on his face. For these champions, all the pain and sacrifice was worth it to get their names in the Guinness World Records. Then, who holds the most world records?

That coveted title belongs to Ashrita Furman, a 57-year-old health food store manager from New York. Surprisingly, he holds an astonishing 137 Guinness World Records! Just last week, he aimed to set another record by setting the underwater rope jumping record - which stands at 900 in an hour. He was surrounded by manatees and was assisted with scuba gear when skipping. However, the results weren¡¯t available at presstime.

His accomplishments are quite impressive considering that Mr. Furman never thought he could ever break a record because he was very ¡°nonathletic.¡± Born in 1954 in Brooklyn - the same year the Guinness World Records was made - Mr. Furman said he was fascinated with the book as a child. His interest in record-breaking began when he met Sri Chinmoy, a Bengali guru, in 1964. It was Chinmoy who challenged him to ¡°break records.¡±

Inspired, Mr. Furman set his first official record in 1979 by doing 27,000 jumping jacks. Since then, he has set records on all seven continents and in more than 30 different countries. Some of the records he holds include juggling on a pogo stick the furthest distance, the fastest mile on a kangaroo ball, spinning the world¡¯s largest hula hoop, and balancing on a Swiss ball.

¡°I love the challenge, and they¡¯re a tribute to Sri Chinmoy, who is my inspiration to reach for self-transcendence,¡± Furman said. ¡°The records are my meditation. I practice my own self-transcendence by overcoming obstacles that seem impossible. I¡¯m trying to show others that our capacity is unlimited if we can truly believe in ourselves.¡±

Let¡¯s hope he will set many other new world records! Way to go, Mr. Furman!
