 Walt
Disney is one of the most important cultural figures in history. He is
the person who created the first sound cartoon, the first
all-color cartoon, and the
first animated feature length motion picture.
During his extraordinary career, he
co-founded Walt Disney Productions,
which is now one of the best-known motion picture
producers in the world -
and Disneyland - the world’s most famous theme park. He also created
some of the most beloved characters of all time, such as Mickey
Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto.
 Surprisingly, despite the public fascination with Disney,
not a lot of movies have been made about the legendary cartoonist. However, Oscar-winner Tom Hanks is
set to play Disney in a film about the making of the children’s classic Mary Poppins.
Hanks will star opposite British actress
Emma Thompson, who will portray Australian author PL Travers. Travers
held out for more than 14 years before finally agreeing to allow Hollywood
adapt her book.
 The
movie, titled Saving Mr. Banks, will tell the story of Travers’ deep
discomfort over the film
version of what was a highly personal book. Mary Poppins, which was
published in 1934, was inspired by hardships in the writer’s
life, as well as her relationship with her father.
Travers was not impressed by the final film, which is now
considered a classic, and thus refused to sell any of her
other stories to Disney. In total, there are eight novels about the
magical English nanny who turns up at the
Banks household in London to care for the two children.
 Disney’s
musical starred an Oscar-winning Julie Andrews in her Hollywood debut as Poppins as well
as American actor Dick Van Dyke. The movie is most well-known for
songs such as “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” which
won the 1965 best song Academy Award. When the film was released in
1965, it was a huge hit.
Acting legend Hanks recently starred in the Oscar-nominated Extremely
Loud and Incredibly Close. His previous hits include Forrest
Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, Cast Away, and The Da Vinci
Code. Thompson, who recently appeared in the Harry Potter
films as Divination professor Sybill Trelawney will co-star in this summer’s
highly anticipated Men in Black
III with Will Smith and Pixar’s Brave. |
