Running a marathon is very hard. You have to run many kilometers to finish it. It takes many hours to complete the full course. Think about it. It will be very difficult to run for several hours straight even for healthy young people! To our surprise, a 100-year-old Indian grandfather named Fauja Singh did it!
On October 16, he set a new world record as the world¡¯s oldest marathon runner. The marathon was held in Toronto, Canada. He finished the race in eight hours, 25 minutes, and 16 seconds. He finished in 3,850th place ahead of 5 other competitors. Another surprising fact is that Mr. Singh also held the title of the fastest marathon runner in the over-90 category. He ran a full marathon course in 5 hours and 40 minutes at the age of 92.
Born in 1911 in India, Mr. Singh was a farmer. He moved to Britain 50 years ago. He started running 11 years ago after his wife and son died. He ran 16 kilometers every day to console his sadness. So, what is his secret of good health? ¡°The secret to a long and healthy life is to be stress-free. I also often enjoy eating ginger curry and cups of tea,¡± he explained. ¡°Being happy is also very important to stay healthy. If there is something you can¡¯t change, then why worry about it?¡± he added with a big smile. ¡°Be grateful for everything you have, stay away from people who are negative, stay smiling, and keep running!¡±
