Dogs are a man¡¯s best friend. They are loyal and provide much joy and companionship. Some even believe that dogs resemble their owners. But is this true? Surprisingly, a new study suggests that the breed someone chooses could reveal aspects of their personality.

Researchers from Bath Spa University in England surveyed 1,000 dog owners through an online questionnaire. The questions were designed to test the five main personality traits: extroversion, agreeableness, emotional stability, conscientiousness, and intelligence. They found that people are drawn towards different types of dog depending on their lifestyle and character. This is because we tend to match ourselves with pets that we feel we share something in common with.

¡°I think when you look for a dog at some level, you look for something that is a bit like you,¡± said Dr. Lance Workman, who led the study. ¡°It¡¯s a bit like a partner. You need to have a lot in common if it¡¯s going to last.¡±

Owners also choose dogs that fit their lifestyles. Active dogs like retrievers and greyhounds appeal to people who enjoy spending time outdoors. People who own herding dogs, like German shepherds or sheepdogs, tend to be more extroverted. Owners of hound dogs are more emotionally stable. People who own sporting dogs, like cocker spaniels, are agreeable and honest; and owners of toy dogs, like Chihuahuas or Yorkshire terriers, were more agreeable, more sincere and more open to new experiences. What kind of dog breed do you keep at home?
