As of October 31, the world population reached seven billion for the first time. According to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA)±¹Á¦¿¬ÇÕÀα¸±â±Ý , the seven billion mark was passed earlier than expected. This is because people are living longer, more babies are surviving, and more children are being born in developing nations. The United Nations warned that the number of people on Earth could double by the end of the century.

Currently, Asia is the most populous continent and it will remain the most populous area in the world. More than 4 billion people are living in Asia today. The number will rise to 5.2 billion in 2052. Africa will also be a populous continent by 2100 with 3.6 billion people. Currently, about one billion people are living in the hot continent. The populations of all other major areas including the Americas, Europe, and Oceania will also rise to nearly 2 billion in 2060.
But, the world population is not growing as fast as it was in the mid 1960s. This is because many developed countries have a lower birth rate today. However, the number of people in developing countries, including India, continues to grow. If birth rates in developing world keep growing, the total population could reach 10.6 billion by 2050 and 15 billion by 2100.

According to the UN¡¯s recent report, much of the population increase is expected to come from the countries with high birth rates. Such countries are located: nine in Asia, 39 in Africa, six in Oceania, and four in Latin America. In order to control the number of people, many countries are urging people to have ¡°two or fewer¡± children.
Increasing world population can lead to many problems. The amount of space people take up is not a major problem. If there are more people, we will suffer from food and water shortages. In fact, food and water on Earth are running out. Also, we have to think about equity, social justice, distribution, and consumption.

The UN said that there are more young people in the world than ever before today. Most of them are living in the developing nations. The UN also predicts that about 70 percent of people will live in cities by 2050. This means that there must be more investment in urban planning.

Experts say that more should be done to limit population growth in both the developed and developing world. We need to find ways to create a better world for future generations. Slowing the world population growth is very important to make the world a better place.
