Mark Twain is called the father of American literature. Also, he is one of the most famous writers in the world. He is best known for his book The Adventures of Huckleberry FinnÇãŬº£¸® ÇÉÀÇ ¸ðÇè. This book is called the Great American Novel. Mark Twain wrote 28 books and numerous short stories throughout his career. This week, let¡¯s meet the great writer Mark Twain!

Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835 in a small town in Missouri in the U.S. His name at birth was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Mark Twain is his pen name. Samuel¡¯s father was a judge. When Samuel was 12, his father died. At 13, he left school to work. After two years, he joined his brother¡¯s newspaper as an editorial helper. It was here that young Samuel discovered that he enjoyed writing!

At 17, Samuel moved to St. Louis in Missouri. There, he became a riverboat pilot in 1858. His pen name ¡°Mark Twain¡± comes from his days as a riverboat pilot. It is a river term, which means that it is safe to navigate.
The Civil War put an end to the steamboat traffic in 1861. So, Samuel became out of work. He decided to leave Missouri. And he left for California. In San Francisco, he began working as a newspaper reporter. In 1870, he married Olivia Langdon, and they had four children.


Mark Twain began to gain fame when his story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calavaras County appeared in the New York Saturday Press on November 18 in 1865. His first book The Innocents Abroad was published in 1869.

In 1885, Mark Twain published his most popular book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In 1876, he published The Adventures of Tom SawyerÅè ¼Ò¿©ÀÇ ¸ðÇè.

Mark Twain passed away on April 21, 1910. But many people still remember him today. His childhood home in Missouri is open to the public as a museum. In California, people hold Mark Twain festivals every third weekend in May.
