It is very hard to win at international music competitions. There are a variety of contests for piano and stringed instruments around the world. However, there are very few international contests for the clarinet. In addition, these contests are held only every four or five years, making it extremely hard to win an international clarinet competition. Surprisingly, a young Korean clarinetist named Kim Sang Yoon won the first international Jacques Lancelot clarinet competition in Rouen, France!

Winning the competition in France as a Korean has significant meaning since the clarinet originated from that country. Since Koreans have a smaller physique than westerners, it is not easy for them to win an international competition. However, the 24-year-old clarinetist did just that!

Kim visited Korea two weeks ago to play concerts in his homeland. The Kids Times had a wonderful chance to meet the rising clarinetist on May 17 in Seoul to talk about his amazing feat and future plans. Kim, who came into the spotlight when he became the first Korean to enter the prestigious Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris (CNSMDP)Æĸ®±¹¸³°íµîÀ½¾Ç¿ø in France, made headlines again by making history when he won the competition in March this year. ¡°Winning the competition was the happiest moment in my music career,¡± said Kim with a bright smile.
Kim moved to France at the age of 15 and graduated from the Conservatoire National de Rueil-Malmaison¸»¸ÞÁ¾ ±¹¸³À½¾Ç¿ø at the top of his class. He went on to study at the CNSMDP and graduated from the school with excellent grades. He studied under the world-famous clarinetist Michel Arrignon. Currently, he is studying at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles, California to get an Artistic Diploma under a full scholarship and is studying under Professor Yehuda Gilad. He also plays in concerts in Europe and the U.S.

When asked about the charms of the clarinet, he said, ¡°The clarinet can make the smallest and most delicate sounds of all instruments. And if I make a mistake, everyone will notice right away. In fact, it is an extremely sensitive instrument that is hard to control. But this is the reason why I love the clarinet.¡±

Unlike the piano or the violin, the clarinet is still an unfamiliar instrument to the general public. ¡°I hope more people will start enjoying listening to the clarinet. Using it as the background music for movies or TV dramas can help people become interested in the instrument. I¡¯d like to narrow the gap between me and the audience,¡± said Kim.

¡°I will keep trying to become a great clarinetist. I¡¯m not sure if I¡¯m the world¡¯s best clarinetist yet, but I¡¯m confident that one day, I will become the best clarinetist in the world! Playing the clarinet is what I truly enjoy doing and what I¡¯m best at. I hope to see The Kids Times readers often at my concerts!¡±
