So far, countless daredevils all around the world have taken the challenge to climb the world¡¯s tallest mountain, Mount Everest. Some people have succeeded, but many have failed or even lost their lives. Climbing the mountain requires physical strength as well as a strong mentality and patience.
To our and the whold world's surprise, a 73-year-old Japanese woman has done the amazing feat of conquering Mount Everest!

On May 19, Tamae Watanabe set a new world record when she reached the top of the world¡¯s tallest mountain. She became the oldest female to climb Mount Everest, breaking the record she set 10 years ago.
In 2002, she reached the top of Everest at the age of 63 and became the oldest woman to stand on the peak. She has broken her own record a decade later.

Ms. Watanabe led a team of four on the new challenge on the northern face of Everest. After setting out from their last camp, the team climbed all night until they finally reached the summit. ¡°She is a very strong climber and has always been very active,¡± said Ang Tshering, a Sherpa who coached the climbers. ¡°It has been a very hard climb and it was made harder by the weather. But she did not give up and finally did it!¡± he added.

Conquering the mountain is not easy even for young, strong men. So, it is quite amazing for the granny to have achieved the feat again. Ms. Watanabe has always loved mountains and she has been climbing mountains in Japan and all around the world for many years.

In fact, she has climbed some of the most famous mountains in the world since the mid-1970s. Her conquests include Mount McKinley in Alaska, the Eiger in Switzerland and Lhotse in Nepal, the fourth-highest mountain in the world.

Currently, Ms. Watanabe, who is a retired office worker, lives at the foot of Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan. She thinks age is just a number. ¡°You may think I¡¯m too old to climb mountains. But I¡¯m still healthy and strong. I will keep climbing mountains!¡± she said. Maybe she will surprise the world again by breaking her own record in a decade¡¯s time!
