We have to breathe all the time to survive. We don¡¯t really think about our breathing, although it is extremely important. In fact, breathing correctly not only helps you live longer but it can also put you in a good mood. It will also help you keep performing at your best. This week, let¡¯s take a closer look at the benefits of deep breathing. Then, you will know why you should make this a part of your everyday life.

Breathing Helps You Feel Better
Sometimes we feel angry, sad or depressed. When you feel angry, what do you do? You may scream at someone or even act violently. However, it doesn¡¯t help you feel better. Rather, it makes the situation worse. If you feel upset the next time, try to take a deep breath before you get mad. Close your eyes for a moment and breathe in and out slowly for a few minutes. You may also think about happy images while doing this. Deep breathing will help clear uneasy feelings out of your body.

Breathing Helps You Relax
When you are angry, scared, or stressed, your body is tense. Your muscles get tight and your breathing becomes shallow. Your body doesn¡¯t get enough oxygen. The next time you are tense, take a deep breath several times. It will help you relax and feel better.

Breathing Helps Release Toxins
Did you know that your body releases 70 percent of its toxins through breathing? When you exhale air from your body, you release carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a natural waste of your body¡¯s metabolism. If you don¡¯t breathe properly, your body doesn¡¯t release its toxin. Then, other systems in your body must work overtime. It can lead to various health problems. This is why deep breathing is important. Even in the old Greek and Roman times, doctors recommended deep breathing. They believed that it cleansed the body and gave it strength. Breathing can also strengthen the immune system, heart, and lungs. It helps relieve pain, too.

How to Breathe Properly
Then, how should we breathe? You need to breathe deeply into your belly not just your chest to breathe properly. Breathing exercises should be deep, slow, and rhythmic. You need to breathe through the nose, not through the mouth. Now, let¡¯s try deep breathing together. First, inhale through your nose, expanding your belly. Then, fill your chest with air, counting to five. Second, hold your breath for three seconds. While holding your breath, imagine that your body is filled with strong, bright energy. Lastly, exhale slowly through your mouth, counting to five. Taking a deep breath is easy, and it is a very effective way to stay healthy. Do this breathing exercise every day for about five to ten minutes.
