Today,
Sumatran rhinos are highlyendangered. They are the
smallest rhino species. Also, they are the
most endangered of all rhinos. Sadly, their numbers are declining
rapidly. However, here¡¯s
good news. Recently, a baby Sumatran rhino was born in Indonesia.
The baby rhino was born on June 23 at a national park in western
Indonesia. It is a male. According to the Indonesian
forestry minister, it is
only the fourth birth in captivity in more than
a century. Indonesia has been
trying to increase the number of Sumatran
rhinos.
Only
four baby rhinos have been born in captivity over the last century. Still, the
fourth birth of the Sumatran rhinos is a milestone for the conservation of the highly
endangered species. It is also raising conservationists¡¯ hopes
for the continuedexistence of the endangered
rhinos in Indonesia.
There are only about 200 Sumatran rhinos in the wild in Indonesia and Malaysia.
They are living in small groups. Another 10 Sumatran rhinos live in
captivity and four others in a rhino sanctuary at the Way Kambas
National Park. There were more than 400 of them in the wild in Asia
15 years ago.
