On
July 4, the annual Fourth of July International
Hot Dog Eating Contest was held in New York.
The contest is held every year to celebrate the national holiday. Many hot
dog lovers came to compete from all across the U.S. and Canada. So,
who is the champion this year?
The name of the hot dog champion is Joey Chestnut. The 28-year-old
man is from San Jose, California. He beat the other 14 male eaters from the U.S.
and Canada. To our surprise, he has won the competition six years straight!
Mr. Chestnut ate 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes in front of a crowd of nearly 40,000 people. In
fact, he is the number one ranked eater in the world.
He made a name for himself in 2007 by winning the annual hot dog eating
contest. Since then, he has won the
competition six years in a row!
¡°I was nervous. I was eating like
a madman. It¡¯s like a marathon runner in the 26th
mile,¡± he said. ¡±I was pushing my body to the absolute limit and the last minute is the hardest. Now I¡¯m starting
to feel better and better. I¡¯m just going to have to take a nap.¡±
In the women¡¯s competition, Korean-American Sonya Thomas became the
champion. She ate 45 hot dogs, beating the record of 41 she set in
2009. In fact, she holds 25 world records. ¡°It is all
about being mentally prepared,¡± she said
when asked about the secret to her success.
¡°It¡¯s about mental control. I said to myself
¡®I¡¯m going to eat more than 45 hot dogs today and I don¡¯t want to
disappoint myself.¡¯ So I
pushed myself. I was really fighting with myself and it worked,¡± said
the 44-year-old champion. |
