Who
doesn¡¯t love chocolate? The sweet taste of chocolate makes
our mouths happy. Some people actually feel better after
eating chocolate when they are stressed. Dark chocolate is actually
good for your health. However, we might not be able to enjoy chocolate
as often in the near future. According to a new study, chocolate could
become an expensive luxury item due to climate change.
We can easily find chocolate products at supermarkets.
As a matter of fact, there
are a great variety of chocolate bars and treats to choose from. Chocolate is
loved by people all over the world. It is consumed not only by children
but also by adults.
Sadly, chocolate prices are rising due to
global warming. A new study on chocolate was recently done in Britain, which has the greatest
variety of chocolate bars in the world. Britain is also one of the
biggest consumers of chocolate per capita.
The study of cocoa plantations in the Cote d¡¯Ivoire
and Ghana found that the amount of land suitable for cocoa production could halve by
2050 due to temperature rise. More than half of the world¡¯s cocoa
is grown in the two countries.
Chocolate
will surely become more expensive if climate change causes shortages of cocoa. Then
chocolate will become a luxury item and only rich people will be able
to enjoy it. ¡°If the demand of cocoa keeps growing
and the land suitable to grow cocoa decreases, the prices will
go up,¡± said Dr. Peter Laderach
of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture¿´ë³ó¾÷±¹Á¦¿¬±¸¼¾ÅÍ.
Cocoa trees need a cool climate to grow properly. If the Earth¡¯s
temperatures keep going up, cocoa trees could be moved further up into
higher land. However, West Africa is very flat and the potential for this is limited.
Climate change is a huge threat. It is killing many
animals and plants. Our other favorite
food products, such as French wine and Italian pasta, are threatened
by global warming, too. We have
to do something before it¡¯s too late! |
