Children
all over the world love reading fairytales. What is your
favorite fairytale? Stories
like Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Hansel and Gretel,
Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack and the Beanstalk are loved by children
all over the world. However, a growing number of parents
don¡¯t let their children read these fairytales. Why is that?
According to a new survey, American parents
think that traditional fairytales are
too scary for their young children.
The survey asked 2,000 parents about the books their children read.
The research showed that one
in five parents don¡¯t let their children read old classics such as Snow White
and the Seven Dwarves and Rapunzel. Instead, they buy their children
more modern storybooks.
The
poll found that many parents
think that some old fairytales are not good for their children to
read. Some stories include violence, stealing, kidnapping, abuse, and even death. One-third
of parents said their children cried after hearing the gruesome details of Little Red Riding
Hood. And 52 percent of the parents said Cinderella could send a bad
message to their children. This is because in the story, a poor young woman does housework
all day.
Many parents read books with their children at bedtime. The study found
that most parents try to avoid stories that might
give their children nightmares. For example,
over a third of parents don¡¯t like to read The Gingerbread Man to
their children because he gets eaten by a fox in the end.
¡°I often
read my son bedtime stories to soothe him and send him off
to sleep soundly. But many traditional
fairytales are dark and scary for children,¡±
said a mother of a 6-year-old boy. ¡°So I¡¯m worried about reading these
stories to my young boy because he might have nightmares after hearing
them.¡±
Despite the dark nature of classic fairytales,
however, half of parents said traditional tales are more likely to
have a strong moral message than modern
books. This is because in old fairytales, good always triumphs over evil. |
