are many powerful female leaders in the world. A growing number of
women are actively engaged in various fields including politics, business
and media. Among the many powerful women in the world, Forbes magazine
ranked German Chancellor Angela Merkel the most powerful woman in
the world.
Born on July 17th in 1954, Merkel is the first female Chancellor of
Germany. The former physical chemist entered politics in 1989. She
is playing important roles in managing the financial crisis in Europe.
She is also focusing on health care reform and problems concerning
future energy development. People call her ¡°the decider.¡±?
According to Forbes magazine¡¯s annual survey, Merkel is still the
most powerful woman in the world. The list named women involved in
politics, business, media, entertainment, technology, and non-profit
organizations. They were ranked according to influence, the amount
of money they control or earn, and media presence.
Merkel ranked as the world¡¯s most powerful woman for the second year
in a row. The magazine noted her resolve in preserving the European
Union. It also thought highly of her influence over the euro zone¡¯s
ongoing debt crisis.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was placed second, followed
by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. Clinton was applauded for her
excellent handling of many diplomatic crises. As for Rousseff, she
was praised for her outstanding leadership of the world¡¯s eighth largest
economy.? Her approval ratings within her country also helped her
become one of the world¡¯s most powerful women.
According to Forbes, the average age of the 100 most powerful women
from 28 countries was 55. Altogether, they had over 90 million Twitter
followers. The wife of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and co-chair
of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Melinda Gates, executive
editor of The New York Times Jill Abramson, and U.S. First Lady Michelle
Obama were also included in the list.
Actress/singer Jennifer Lopez and widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs,
Laurene Powell Jobs, were newly included in the list. The youngest
powerful woman in the world is pop star Lady Gaga who placed 14th
and the oldest one is 86-year-old Queen Elizabeth II at 26th. |
