Owl are interesting birds. They have big eyes and flat faces. Owls have long been cultural symbols. They have been found in cave paintings in France and Egypt. Owls are found in many countries. There are different owl species found on all continents except Antarctica. Then, how many owl species are there in the world?

Owls are active at night. They usually hunt insects, small mammals and other birds when it is dark. The color of their feathers helps them blend into their environment. Some owl species also hunt fish. Owls have powerful talons (claws) which help them catch and kill their prey.

Owls are far-sighted and they can¡¯t see things close to their eyes clearly. They cannot turn their eyes. But they can turn their heads as much as 270 degrees! An owl has three eyelids: one for blinking, one for sleeping, and one for keeping the eye clean and healthy.

There are around 200 different owl species in the world. Only 19 owl species are found in North America. For most owl species, females are larger, heavier and more aggressive than males. A group of owls is called a parliament, wisdom or study. Baby owls are called owlets.
