Every year, we can encounter newly coined words. The world-famous British author J.K. Rowling also invented many new words in her wildly popular Harry Potter books. But there is a secret behind the birth of these words.

The bestselling author has invented hundreds of words including Muggle and Quidditch for the the wizard world of the Harry Potter books. Such words have become pop culture vocabulary. Recently, she confessed in an interview that she had a hard time to come up with these words. She even learned teen slangs to understand teen culture!

Then, who taught her teen slangs? To keep up with the always-evolving slang of the younger generation, Rowling was ¡°tutored by a real professional¡± which is her eldest daughter, Jessica. ¡°Language isn¡¯t and shouldn¡¯t be static. Newly-coined words really interest me,¡± she said.

Rowling admitted that she got wrong loads of newly-made words and abbreviations that are commonly used by teenagers. So her daughter Jessica tutored her on teen slangs! ¡°I remember the first time I heard a teenager say ¡®LOL.¡¯ It means ¡®laughing out loud.¡¯ Some of today¡¯s abbreviated slang is quite ugly, but some words seemed interesting to me,¡± Rowling said.

¡°I¡¯m a middle-aged woman. And as a writer, I find it very interesting. But it would be embarrassing if I started trying to use it too fluently. Sometimes you¡¯ve got to accept you don¡¯t belong in that teenage group,¡± she added with a smile.
