There are so many different kinds of crabs in the world; over 7,000
species. Many species are
edible and the blue crab
of the Atlantic coast is one of the most popular. About one-quarter of the crab¡¯s
weight is meat.
Crabs are
found in the ocean and on the rocky sandy coasts. Average crabs live no longer
than 3 years. Crabs mostly feed on plants. They
like to eat algae. However, they also
feed on some small creatures such as worms.
Believe it or not, crabs have teeth in their stomachs! They have 10 legs
and a pair of claws. Their claws are used to pick up
things. If a crab loses its claw, the claw grows back! Male crabs
often have larger claws than females. Male crabs have narrow abdomens, while female crabs
have broader abdomens. Crabs have
gills like fish that helps
them breathe in the water. |
