It¡¯s already May. This is the most beautiful month of the year. Emerald is the birthstone for May. Lily of the ValleyÀº¹æ¿ï²É is the flower for the month of May.
It is one of the most interesting months of the year, too. This is because there are many important events this month.

In Korea, we celebrate Children¡¯s Day on May 5, Parents¡¯ Day on May 8, and Teacher¡¯s Day on May 15. Buddha¢¥s Birthday is also celebrated in May. Other countries celebrate many important occasions in May, too.

In the U.S., Memorial DayÇöÃæÀÏ is observed on the last Monday in May. It is a public holiday and is observed in memory of those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The graves of war heroes are decorated with flowers. In Mexico, people celebrate Cinco De Mayo on May 5. This is the anniversary of the Mexican victory over the French at Puebla in 1862. It is a national holiday in Mexico.

Mother¡¯s Day is also celebrated in May in the U.S. and Canada. It is the most popular festival after Christmas and Valentine¡¯s Day in North America. Mother¡¯s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. People express love to their mothers on this day with flowers and cards and thank them for their constant support and love.

Many other important events happened in world history. The Empire State Building opened on May 1, 1931 in New York. Karl Marx, the world-famous German philosopher, economist, and sociologist was born on May 5, 1818. Napoleon died in St. Helena on May 5, 1821. The first postage stamp in England was issued on May 6, 1840. Mother¡¯s Day became a public holiday in the U.S. on May 9, 1914. The Golden Gate Bridge opened in San Francisco on May 27, 1937. On May 29, 1917, the 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy, was born in Massachusetts. On May 30, 1498, Christopher Columbus began his third voyage to the New World.
