Have
you seen a ladybug before? It is a very
interesting creature. Ladybugs are usually
red or orange in color and they have interesting dots. But do you
know why they have such bright colors? And do you know why they are
called ladybugs? If you are curious, please keep reading!
There are nearly 5,000 different kinds
of ladybugs all over the world. There are about 500 different kinds
in the U.S. alone. From reds, yellows,
orange, grey, black, and even blue,
they come in all different colors
and dot shapes.
Just like the four-leaf clover, ladybugs
are considered to be good luck in many countries. Many people believe
the ladybugs will bring good luck to them. This is because ladybugs
save crops from bad pests.
So, how did they get their unique name? The origin of their name goes
back to the Middle Ages. At the time,
swarms of pests were destroying
crops. Farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary, the mother of
Jesus, for help. Soon after, ladybugs came and ate the bad pests and
saved the crops! So the farmers called these bugs, ¡°Beetles of Our
Lady.¡± The ¡°lady¡± in ladybug refers to the Virgin Mary.
Later, they became known as ¡°ladybugs.¡± |
