These days, the weather has
been beautiful. Spring is the perfect season to spend some time outdoors.
How about going jogging in the morning or
after school? It makes you healthier and stronger. It will also make
you live longer!
According to a new study, regular jogging increases life expectancy. The study
found that jogging could add six years of life for men and five years
for women. Researchers at the Copenhagen
City Heart Study in Denmark, studied the longevity of Danish joggers. The study started
in 1976. It followed the heart health of around 20,000 people aged
20 to 93.
The researchers found that jogging as little as an hour a week is
enough to add extra years to your life.
They also found that gentle jogging appeared to
be better than sprinting. ¡°Male joggers who spent between
60 minutes and 150 minutes a week at a slow or average pace lived on average 6.2
years longer than those who don¡¯t exercise,¡± said the researchers
said, adding ¡°As for female joggers, they lived
5.6 extra years.¡±
The
results of the research was presented at a meeting of
the European Society of Cardiology, which was held in Dublin last
week. ¡°We can say with certainty that regular jogging
increases longevity. The good news is that you don¡¯t actually need to jog for
a long time to reap the benefits,¡± said Dr. Peter
Schnohr, chief cardiologist on the
heart study project.
The research team also looked at 1,116 male joggers and 762 female
joggers and compared their lifespans to non-joggers. ¡°Mortality is lower in people
who jog in moderate pace than in non-joggers
or those who undertake extreme levels of exercise,¡±
explained Dr. Schnohr. ¡°In order to reap the benefit
of jogging, you should aim to feel a little breathless, but not very
breathless.¡±
Look outside, everyone. The weather is perfect for jogging. You don¡¯t
need to run a lot or fast. Just enjoy a light jog about three times
a week. If you want to double the fun, jog with
your family or friends. Then you won¡¯t feel bored. It will also help
you stay healthy and live a long life! |
