¡®The Scream¡¯ Becomes the Most Expensive Painting Sold at Auction

May 2, Edvard Munch¡¯s impressionist masterpiece, The Scream,
was put up for auction in New York City.
sold for a record-breaking price, the famous painting fetched $119,922,500
million! The auction¡¯s starting
price began at $50 million, and was sold to an unnamed telephone bidder in just 15 minutes!
The Scream beat out Pablo Picasso¡¯s
Nude, Green Leaves and Bust ´©µå, ³ì»ö ÀÙ°ú »ó¹Ý½Å for the most expensive painting ever sold
at auction. Picasso¡¯s painting was sold for $106.5 million in 2010.
The Scream used to be owned by a Norwegian businessman named Petter
Olsen, whose father was a friend of the artist. The painting is one
of four versions and the only one
owned by a private collector.
The other three paintings are displayed in Norwegian museums. This edition is the most vibrant of the four. Mr.
Olsen said he will use the proceeds to establish a new museum, art
center, and hotel in Norway, which will be dedicated to Munch¡¯s work
and life. The new museum will be opened next year correlating with
the 150th anniversary of Munch's birth.
Mr. Olsen also plans on restoring the artist¡¯s
home and studio. Munch (1863-1944) was an expressionist artist from
Norway. He is best known for his painting, The Scream. |
