‘The Scream’ Becomes the Most Expensive Painting Sold at Auction    [11-05-2012] On May 2, Edvard Munch’s impressionist masterpiece, The Scream, was put up for auction in New York City. sold for a record-breaking price, the famous painting fetched $119,922,500 million! The auction’s starting price began at $50 million, and was sold to an unnamed telephone bidder in just 15 minutes! The Scream beat out Pablo Picasso’s Nude, Green Leaves and Bust 누드, 녹색 잎과 상반신 for the most expensive painting ever sold at auction. Picasso’s painting was sold for $106.5 million in 2010. The Scream used to be owned by a Norwegian businessman named Petter Olsen, whose father was a friend of the artist. The painting is one of four versions and the only one owned by a private collector. The other three paintings are displayed in Norwegian museums. This edition is the most vibrant of the four. Mr. Olsen said he will use the proceeds to establish a new museum, art center, and hotel in Norway, which will be dedicated to Munch’s work and life. The new museum will be opened next year correlating with the 150th anniversary of Munch's birth. Mr. Olsen also plans on restoring the artist’s home and studio.
