Koalas are lovely animals. They are found in Australia. Just like kangaroos, they are marsupials. Yes, they can carry their young in a pouch! A new born koala is very small. It stays in its mother¡¯s pouch for the first six months. But why do people call them koala bears? Are they really bears? If you are curious to learn more about koalas, keep reading!

Koalas are native to Australia. They have been around in the country for about 20 million years! The name koala comes from an Australian Aboriginal dialect. It means ¡°animal that does not drink.¡± Koalas eat eucalypt leaves and almost nothing else. Eucalyptus leaves provide them with the water they need. So they do not drink water.

Koalas spend almost 20 hours each day sleeping and resting. They eat or move from tree to tree when they are not sleeping. They are active at night. They usually sleep and rest during daylight hours. Koalas are not social animals. They like to spend time alone.

Koalas are very cute and lovely. They somewhat resemble bears, but they are not bears at all! The word bear was added to their name only because they look like teddy bears! They are not related to the bear family. Interestingly, koalas have similar fingerprints to humans! You may want to keep a koala as a pet, but it is illegal to keep them as pets.
