Everyone
grows old. You are still young, but you will become a gray-haired grandma or grandpa
later in your lifetime. You may think getting old is no fun. But this
is not true. According to Benedict XVI, it is beautiful to be old!
Last Monday, the 85-year-old Pope visited an old people¡¯s home in
Rome. During his visit, he said that it is ¡°beautiful to be old.¡±
He said society should embrace elderly people as a gift
to appreciate and value. ¡°They should be esteemed for their wisdom
and experience of life,¡± he said.
Sadly,
however, many elderly people all over the world are suffering from the global
economic crisis. Many societies reject them, considering them useless
and unproductive. In fact, the
number of old people who are forgotten, lonely, and poor is on the
rise all over the world, including Europe and Korea.
Today¡¯s
society is driven by the logic of efficiency and profit. Therefore,
it only embraces young people who are healthy and productive. It often
makes little of elderly people due to their physical weakness.
¡°I know well the difficulties, the problems,
and the limits of this age,¡± said the Pope. ¡°However, the elderly
still have a great deal to offer society despite their physical limitations.
I want to say to you with profound conviction. It is beautiful
to be old because you are wiser and more experienced!¡± said the Pope.
According to the Pope, the quality of a society is judged
by how well it treats its elderly. In order
to become an advanced society, we should
treat our elderly with respect and love.
After all, all of us, sooner or later, will become
senior citizens, too! |
