How Many Species of Starfish Are There?    [07-12-2012]

Starfish are interesting sea animals. They look like stars! This is why they are also called ¡°sea stars.¡± Starfish have many arms. Most have 5 arms, but some have 10, 20, or even up to 40 arms! Starfish are about 12 to 24 centimeters, and can weigh 5 kilograms. Then, how many species of starfish are there in the world?

The starfish got its name from its star-shaped body. Unlike its name, it is not actually a fish! It is an invertebrate. Interestingly, it has no brain. It doesn¡¯t have a single drop of blood in its body either!

Sea stars can be found in all the world¡¯s oceans. They are also found in shallow waters, but never in freshwater bodies. Amazingly, if a starfish loses its arm, it can regenerate the same one in about a year! If a starfish is chopped into pieces, each piece can grow a whole new starfish!

There are over 2,000 species of starfish in the world. They come in many different colors, sizes, and shapes. A female starfish can produce around a million eggs at one time. To our surprise, starfish can change their gender whenever they want! In the wild, they can live up to 35 years.
