Penguins are amazing and interesting animals. They are actually birds and they do have wings. But they cannot fly! You may feel sorry for them. But did you know that they can walk faster than humans? They are also great swimmers. Sadly, many species of penguins are endangered.

Many people think penguins live only in Antarctica. But they can also be found in South America, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. They can even be found on many small islands in the southern Pacific Ocean.

Penguins lost the ability to fly millions of years ago. Even though they cannot fly, they are excellent swimmers. In fact, they are the fastest swimming and deepest diving species of any bird. Interestingly, penguins¡¯ eyes work better underwater than they do in the air. They can spot prey even in dark or murky water!

There are 18 species of penguins in the world. Sadly, 13 species of them have declining populations. Five of them are considered endangered. Oil spills, pollution, and global warming are the main threats for them. If strong protection measures are not taken, they will go extinct!
