On December 5, three Kids Reporters and The Kids Times Editor-in-Chief Julia Baik paid a visit to Korea¡¯s Girl Scouts headquarters in Seoul. The National Executive Director, Park Young-shin, welcomed us warmly. Our Kids Reporters had a pleasant interview with the kind director, discussing the recent campaign the organization held to help the victims of sexual violence with Happy Bean.

This important campaign is called ¡°End Violence Against Girls.¡± From October 11 to December 11, girls raised funds to help the victims of sexual violence. Many girls across the nation participated in the event. As a result, the campaign collected a large amount of money. Our Kids Reporters Kim Young-shin, Koo Min-joo, and Lee Ga-hyun share this great chance in learning about the campaign from Ms. Park.

Kim: Please tell us about the Girl Scouts.
Park: In 1910, Sir. Robert Baden Powell started the ¡°Girl Guide Movement¡± in the UK. The movement spread to the U.S. and led to the birth of the Girl Scouts. Now it is the biggest international social education organization for girls with over 10 million members in 145 countries. We are doing many things to help girls and young women develop their potential powers and become global leaders. We also do a lot of volunteer work and have many education programs.

Koo: Please tell us about the recent fund-raising campaign.
Park: Girl Scouts Korea and Happy Bean are working together to help victims of sexual violence. ¡°End Violence Against Girls¡± was launched in 2011 to root out sexual crimes against girls. This year, 40 million netizens as well as members of the Girl Scouts participated in the meaningful event and it was very successful!

Kim: How did you raise funding for the campaign?
Park: Girls made donation boxes and got money from the people around them. That added up to become 30 million won! Also, many netizens took part in the online donation through Naver¡¯s Happy Bean website. We will do this campaign again next year. Please participate in the campaign.

Lee: What about other countries? Do they have similar campaigns?
Park: Yes, they do. Girls Scouts all over the world work together to improve the lives of girls and change the world. For example, we work to end extreme poverty and hunger; combat HIV, AIDS and other disease; and stopping violence against girls.

Koo: What is the vision of the Girl Scouts?
Park: Our vision is to help strengthen the potentials of girls and lead in the changes for the future. We will keep supporting girls and young women so they develop confidence and become great leaders. We will keep supporting girls and young women to make the world a better place for them.

Lee: Do you have any comments
Park: I hope you have dreams and work hard to make your dreams come true. Then, your future will be happy and full of hope. Girl Scouts will keep helping girls to become future leaders and change the world. I hope that you all have dream and make social changes.
