Many people are afraid of sharks. They may look scary, but they are actually amazing creatures! They have an excellent sense of hearing. They can hear sound in the water from as far as 500 meters away. They can also smell very well. Sharks are truly interesting fish. But do they have bones like other fish?

There are over 400 species of sharks in the world. Sharks come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors. The largest shark in the world is the whale shark. It is also the world¡¯s largest fish. Most species of shark are less than one meter long. But some species such as the whale shark can be 14 meters long.

Did you know that sharks don¡¯t have bones in their bodies? Instead of bone, their bodies are made up of cartilage. It is the same type of tough, flexible tissue that makes up human ears and noses. Sharks are cold-blooded. However, unlike other species of sharks, the great white shark is warm-blooded.

Some sharks give birth to live pups (baby sharks). But some species lay eggs. Even though sharks are fish, they don¡¯t have scales like other fish. Instead, sharks have tough skin that is covered by dermal denticles; they are small plates covered with enamel, similar to that found on our teeth.
