Recently,
TIME magazine announced its Person of the
Year. The magazine chooses the most influential or powerful person
at each year. Beating many candidates, including Korean
singer Psy, U.S. President Barack Obama was chosen this year. Recently,
he won a second presidential term. However,
the magazine¡¯s online readers think differently. They chose another
person as the TIME¡¯s Person of the Year!
So, who did they choose? It is none other than the young
leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un! TIME magazine¡¯s online readers
chose the new North Korean leader in an online vote. The son of the late leader Kim Jong-il
received 5.6 million votes
in TIME¡¯s reader poll.
Although Kim Jong-un was chosen as TIME¡¯s Person of the Year by the
readers, it doesn¡¯t mean he will be named the magazine¡¯s official
Person of the Year. TIME executive editor Radhika
Jones noted in the blog post that announced the winners, ¡°We don¡¯t
make our selection based onthe poll results.
But it¡¯s always interesting to see our readers¡¯ opinions.¡±
According
to the magazine, it is not the first time Kim was a topic for the magazine. In
February this year, the magazine published a cover story on
Kim when he became the new leader of North Korea.
The Person of the Year feature was started in 1927. The person is
chosen by the editors of TIME magazine. They choose the person or
persons who most affected the news and our
lives through good or ill will. The person or persons embodies what was important
about the year.
Interestingly, sometimes
the Person of the Year is not a specific person at all. For
example, it was ¡°The Protester¡± in 2011. In 2006,
it was ¡°You.¡± Let¡¯s wait and see who will be chosen as the Person
of the Year in 2013! |
