The
year 2012 was the Year of the Dragon. The dragon is not a real animal.
It is an imaginary creature. The year 2013 is
the Year of the Snake. Many people are afraid of snakes. But they
are actually amazing creatures! Let¡¯s learn some interesting facts
about snakes!
There are around 3,000 different species of snake in the world.
Snakes are found on every continent of the world except Antarctica. Snakes
are fascinating creatures. Most
of them are harmless. Only a small percentage
of them are venomous.
Snakes are
carnivores. This means they
are meat eaters. Interestingly, they can¡¯t bite food. So they have
to swallow it whole! They have
flexible jaws which allow
them to eat a prey bigger than their head!
Snakes smell with their tongue. Snakes don¡¯t have
eyelids.
Most of the snakes have a large number of teeth. Some snakes have
as many as 200 teeth. However, their teeth are not used for chewing
as they are curved backwards. They are
mainly used for holding the prey. Many people believe that the snakes
do not have bones. But they have bones. They also have organs such as the heart,
the lungs and the kidneys. They also have blood. |
