Stephen
Hawking is a famous British scientist. He is a leader in the fields of physics and cosmology. So far, Hawking received
countless awards and honorary degrees. Now he
is a professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. I¡¯m
sure many of you have seen his pictures. As many of you already know,
he is disabled. Although he is not very healthy,
he is still writing books and doing many wonderful things! This week,
let¡¯s meet the amazing scientist!
Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 in England. Little Stephen
was a smart boy, and he always interested in science. He was also
very good at mathematics.
After graduating high school, Stephen enrolled at University College,
Oxford. He wanted to study mathematics there. But he chose physics
instead because the school
did not have mathematics programs.
Hawking moved to Cambridge from Oxford to take up research in cosmology. Then
he worked on the basic laws which govern the universe. But
in 1963, he got a terrible disease called Lou Gehrig¡¯s disease·ç°Ô¸¯º´.
This disease damages the neuromuscular system, which
allows the body to move. Doctors said Stephen would not live long
enough to finish his study. But Stephen did not lose hope.
¡°Although there was a cloud hanging over my future, I found that I
was enjoying life in the present more than
I had before. And I began to make progress with my research,¡±
he wrote in his diary at that time.
He
kept studying and even wrote many books. His book A Brief History
of Time is the most popular book about cosmology ever written. It
stayed on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks!
In 1985, he caught pneumoniaÆó·Å. He had an operation to save his life.
But sadly, it took away his voice and now he cannot speak. Also, his
condition got worse. Today
he cannot move his body almost at all. But he still communicates his brilliant ideas by using
computers. Last year, he even wrote a book called George¡¯s Secret
Key to the Universe with his daughter Lucy Hawking.
Stephen Hawking is best known for his studies of black holes. Today, he is
widely regarded as one of
the most brilliant scientists since Einstein. And he received a large
number of honors and prizes from all
over the world! |
