On February 25, Park Geun-hye will become a new president of Korea. She will be the first female president of the country. She will be the first president whose father was also a president. She is the daughter of the former President Park Chung-hee, who was the leader of Korea for 18 years. In February, Park Geun-hye will return to Cheongwadae, which is her childhood home.

The first female president of Korea was born on February 2 in 1952 in Daegu. She has a degree in engineering from Sogang University in Seoul. She was 9 years old when her father came to power through a military coup in 1961. When her mother Yuk Young-soo passed away in 1974, Ms. Park served as a first lady for her father.

On December 19, 2012, Park Geun-hye became Korea¡¯s first female president, beating her opponent Moon Jae-in. She has been described by voters as ¡°good-hearted, calm, and trustworthy¡± with the power to ¡°save our country.¡±

Ms. Park has also made history as the first female president in Northeast Asia. Her victory is considered remarkable because women continue to face widespread sexism, huge income gaps, and few opportunities to work in politics in Korea.

Ms. Park has never married and has no children. She said she would devote her life to public service. She also promised to work hard to improve the country¡¯s economic problems when she takes office in February. Many older South Koreans hope she will evoke the strong charisma of her father and settle the country¡¯s economic and security issues.

¡°My role models are Margaret Thatcher and Angela Merkel. Like them, I will work hard to improve women¡¯s rights,¡± said Ms. Park. Recently, Korea came 108th out of 135 countries in a survey on gender equality. Please work hard for us, Ms. Park and make Korea a better country!
