The highest temperature ever to be recorded in Antarctica is 14.6 ¡ÆC. It was recorded on January 5, 1974. The most rain fall ever recorded in 24 hours is 182.5 centimeters in La Reunion, a French island located in the Indian Ocean. It was recorded during the tropical cyclone Denise on January 8, 1966.

The driest place on Earth is Wadi Halfa in Sudan. It receives an annual average rainfall of less than 2.5 millimeters. The wettest place in the world is Mawsynram in India. It receives an average of 11,870 millimeters of rain each year.
Hawaii is also considered one of the wettest places in the world. The most rain fall ever recorded in one year was 25.4 meters in Cherrapunji, India.

The highest snow fall ever recorded in a one year period was 31.1 meters in Mount Rainier, Washington State in the U.S. between February 19, 1971 and February 18, 1972. The heaviest hailstone ever recorded weighed 1.0 kilograms. It landed in Bangladesh on April 14, 1986.

Rain drops range in size from 0.5 millimeters to about 2 millimeters. Rain drops can fall at speeds of about 35 kilometers an hour. The total amount of precipitation to fall to Earth in one year is about 5,000 million tons.
The Earth experiences millions of lightning storms every year. The U.S. has more tornadoes than any other country in the world, averaging around 1,200 a year.
