 Christopher
Reeve was a famous American actor. He was best known for his role as “Superman.” I’m sure
everyone knows who Superman is. Yes, the man who could fly! Reeve
passed away in 2004. However, people all around the world still remember
Christopher Reeve as a real hero. Do you want to know why? Then, keep

Christopher Reeve was born on September 25, 1952, in New York City.
After graduating from high school, he studied at Cornell University,
while working as an actor at the same time. After graduating
from Cornell University in 1974, Reeve pursued his dream of acting.
In 1976, Reeve went to Los Angeles and made his Broadway debut. He
got a small part in Gray Lady Down, a submarine adventure film. In 1978,
he played an exciting role of Superman. With great acting, Reeve made
Superman look real. Superman was a human-like super hero with kind
heart and great powers. “What makes Superman a hero is not that he
has power, but that he has the wisdom to use the power wisely,” Reeve said. Reeve
went on to appear in a total of 17 films,
a dozen television movies, and about 150 plays.
 Sadly, however,
in 1995, he was paralyzed after a horse riding accident. Christopher cried
every day dealing with the reality of being in a wheelchair. “In the morning,
I need 20 minutes to cry,” he said. But one day, he decided to stop
feeling sorry for himself. And then he went on to be an example to others.
He began to use the international interest in his situation to increase public awareness
about spinal cord injury. He also
started to raise money for research into a cure. Christopher made numerous
public appearances around the U.S. after his accident.
Although he was not able to move his body, he continued to travel
and serve as a voice for the disabled in America.
He created his own freedom to be truly alive. Christopher Reeve found
the real Superman within! In 1998, he published his autobiography Still Me. The
book spent 11 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List!
On October 10, 2004, Christopher Reeve died suddenly at age 52. But
people still remembers him as a hero! “I think a hero is an ordinary person who finds
strength to endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles,” he said. “You
have to keep on going in spite of limitations.” |
