What is the golden, sweet stuff that people all over the world enjoy? Yes, it is honey. Honey comes from honey bees. They make not only honey, but also pollinate a lot of fruits, such as apples, melons, and cherries. They are very important to us. In fact, bees are very smart insects. Surprisingly, they have even their own system and rules. Let¡¯s explore the bee¡¯s world together!

A ¡°hive¡± is the place in which bees live and collect their honey. There are three kinds of bees there: the queen, workers and drones. There is only one queen bee per hive and the queen has great power. So the queen is always attended by worker bees. The queen bee feeds on mostly royal jelly, which is very rare and rich in vitamins and nutrients. Surprisingly, the queen bee lays about 2,000 eggs a day!

Do you know that worker bees are all females? Their job is to make honey. They have a short lifespan because they never sleep and work much. The average honey bee will produce a very small amount of honey during its whole life. To make 500 grams of honey, we need 556 worker bees and two million flowers. Considering this fact, we can realize how precious the honey we eat is!

Then what do drones do? Their only reason for being in the hive is to reproduce with the queen. After a certain period of time to reproduce, they are kicked out of the hive because they are not needed anymore.

Honey bees are the only insects to make something that humans eat. They also build honeycomb accurately, with each single cell having six sides. In addition, they have special ways to recognize their family members. They identify their members by a distinct odor.
The most interesting thing is that they communicate with each other by dancing! They dance differently to let other members know information. According to the scientists, they haven¡¯t found exactly how honey bees communicate, because their system is so complicated.
