Do
you know what animal this is in the picture above? Many of you may
be unfamiliar with the animal.
It is the platypus¿À¸®³Ê±¸¸®! It is odd-looking but it is a symbol
of Australia. Its characteristics are as unique
as its look!
It is about 40 centimeters long. And it weighs 1.5 kilograms. Usually, it is found in rivers
and lakes in eastern Australia. It belongs
to the category of mammasl. But the most interesting
thing is that it is one of only three egg-laying mammals in the
world!
The platypus
swims very well. It has webbed feet to swim well.
Therefore, it mostly eats insects such
as larvae and shellfish underwater. And it is such
a big eater. To our surprise, it can eat its own body weight in food
all day long!
Actually, the platypus is among nature¡¯s most unlikely animals. Its face
looks like a duck and its body looks like a beaver and an otter! How unique! The platypus
is a scientifically interesting animal, too. Its teeth have been found
in sediment from the era of
dinosaurs. Do you know what
that means? It means that the platypus has been around for 120 million years! |
