 The
Nobel Prize is a set of annual international awards
given to people with outstanding achievements in science,
peace, and literature. The awards are
made on December 10 every year, the anniversary of Nobel’s death.

The Nobel Prize awards were established by the will of Alfred Nobel
(October 21, 1833 ~ December 10, 1896). He was a Swedish chemist, engineer, and innovator. He was the inventor
of dynamite. He held 350 different patents, including dynamite. He made
a lot of money thanks to his many inventions.
Nobel decided to use his fortune to nurture science and culture.
On November 27, 1895, he signed his last will, giving the largest
share of his fortune to a
series of prizes in Physics, chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Peace,
and Economic science.
Nobel left a fund to provide annual prizes in the areas listed above. These
prizes were first given in 1901. Each prize consists of a gold medal,
a sum of money, and a diploma with citation of the award. The
Nobel Prizes are awarded without regard to nationality. The amount
of money available for each prize
varies from year to year. The Peace Prize is presented in Oslo and
the others in Stockholm.
 Polish-born
French physicist Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.
To our surprise, she won not just one but “two” Nobel Prizes. In 1903,
she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. In 1911, she was the
winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. She is the only woman to
win the award in two different fields. Her daughter, Irene, also won
a Nobel Prize.
Interestingly, Tolstoy was the first great author to be rejected by
the Nobel Committee in the first year.
Also, great inventors Thomas Edison and
Nikola Tesla never won Nobel Prizes. This was because the Nobel Committee
found that the two inventors hated each other so much that they would
not stand on the same stage together!
Korea has only one Nobel Prize winner. In 2000, former President Kim Dae-joong
won the Nobel Peace Prize. Let’s hope Korea will have more Nobel Prize
winners in the near future! |
