 Giant
mammoths once roamed the Earth. Mammoths
are elephant-like animals with
long tusks. But we cannot see
the amazing creatures anymore. The woolly animals went extinct
a long time ago. To our surprise, an 11-year-old Russian boy recently
found a nearly intact mammoth!
Yevgeny Salinder uncovered a tusk, bones,
fur, and flesh of a mammoth
that is thought to be 30,000 years old. It is one of the best preserved mammoths ever found.
The young boy found the remains in permafrost, in Siberia. “I
found it while exploring the area around my home,” he
said. Now the mammoth is informally called “Zhenya”
after the boy’s nickname. The 16-year-old mammoth was about 2 meters
tall and weighed about 500 kilograms.
The woolly beast may have been killed
by an ice-age human or another
mammoth. It will go on a display at the Taymyr Regional Studies Museum
in Russia. Don’t you want to go see it someday? |
