What
pops into your mind first
when you think of turtles? You might think of their slow movement. Aside from that feature, turtles are known
as long-lived animals. In fact,
they live very long. How and why? Let¡¯s find out by reading the following!
According to numerous studies by zoologists, the average life span of turtles
is amazing. Don¡¯t be surprised. It is around 200 years old! In fact,
the longest lived turtle in history until now was a 175-year-old turtle.
And how
can they live so long? It is because of their slow behavior. They
move very slowly. They even eat and breathe slowly! To our surprise,
some species of baby turtle take
about a year to hatch from their eggs! Also, turtles in areas with
temperate climates spend
winter months hiding in the mud without moving. In these
and other ways, turtles save energy. Therefore, they
can live long.
Recently, various ¡°slow¡± movements have become popular all over the
world. There is ¡°slow food¡± and ¡°slow cities.¡± The slow movement is
a cultural shift toward a slower pace of life. Many people
believe slowing down life¡¯s pace will make them stay healthy and live
long. Surprisingly, the idea for these movements came from watching
turtles! |
