Can
you believe the droppings of an animal are
used to make coffee? Surprisingly, there is a special kind of coffee
called Kopi luwak, the world¡¯s most expensive coffee. Which animal
makes this special poop? It is the civet!
The civet is a cat-like animal that is about 60 cm long and weighs
about 4 kg. It usually lives about 20 years long. Where does the civet
live? It lives in several countries of Asia, such as Malaysia and
the Philippines. The civet is not endangered now, but the remaining populations of this animal
are small. That is why the coffee, which is made of its toilet waste,
is expensive.
How does
the civet make coffee? When it eats coffee beans, it digests the soft
outer part of the beans.
Later, hard coffee berries are excreted from its body, keeping their
shape. Amazingly, these beans have a unique, bitter taste! However, people
cannot enjoy it cheaply. This is because the coffee is very rare, so a cup of it is about
50,000 won in Korea! |
