Have
you heard of Montessori education? It is a teaching method which is specialized
for children. The method is used worldwide. Montessori education
basically motivates children
to learn by themselves as they have fun while playing. In fact, Montessori
is the name of the woman who created the method. What made her develop
this method of teaching? Let¡¯s take a close look at her
impressive life story.
Maria Montessori was born in 1870 in Italy. Her parents raised her with all their
love. Also, her mother always said to Maria that she should be a great
person who helps others. When she was in high school, she wanted to
attend a medical college to be a doctor. However, it was impossible
for women to apply to medical school.
It was because at that time in Italy it was not considered a good
idea to educate women. So Maria sent a letter to the pope, explaining her strong
desire to learn. The pope was very impressed by her letter and asked
the college to admit her. She finally studied
medicine there. She was the first women who attended that college.
After
graduating, she worked at a hospital, helping children who had a mental
illness or handicap. While taking care of them, she was very frustrated by the terrible
environment of the hospital. Rooms where the children stayed looked
just like a prison. In addition, workers at the hospital looked down upon the children,
and treated them horribly. At that moment, Maria became determined to educate the
children.
She wanted to teach them in her own way. She put her efforts into
developing a great way to teach those children day and night. In 1899, she
finally succeeded in writing books and creating teaching methods for
mentally disabled children,
and she became a principal at a special school.
Children
who were taught by Maria were as good as other normal students in terms of their learning
abilities. Some of them even seemed to be better than other ordinary children. It was
such a sensation. Many people were very surprised and impressed by
Maria Montessori. ¡°Maria achieved a miracle!¡± they said.
Afterwards, Maria built a day care center and continued
to teach children with her method. Many other educational institutes
emerged that followed her
teaching method. Ultimately, her teaching method spread all over the world.
Even though Montessori passed away in 1952, she
is still recognized as the greatest pioneer and a dedicated teacher who opened
a new era of education. |
