Do
you know a squirrel that can fly? It is the flying squirrell! It is very
popular with children because of its big eyes and cute tails. Also,
when flying it looks funny, because its arms and legs are stretched
out wide, and the skin between them is like a parachute.
The flying squirrel is a medium-sized rodent. There are about 50
different species of flying squirrel around the world. It ranges in size and color
depending on its species, but it is a little bit larger in size than
the common squirrel. The largest
species the Woolly flying squirrel, and the smallest is the Pygmy
flying squirrel.
Flying squirrels have very large eyes and their eyesight is excellent. Also,
they are really good at jumping. They can jump about 6 m! They are
also good at running. They can run about 32 km per hour!
They usually
live in a hole in a tree or inside dead branches. In addition, they
usually eat nuts, seeds, fruits, berries, insects
and bird eggs. Sometimes, they eat meat.
To our surprise, flying squirrels communicate with each other
in a special way. They talk by making chirping sounds and with tail
movements! How interesting!
In Korea, the flying squirrel was designated as a natural monument. It is endangered and so it is being
protected now. If you want to see this animal, visit a zoo this weekend! |
