Why Do Whales Spout Water?    [28-06-2013]
Untitled Document
Look at the picture. The whale is spouting water from its back! It looks really cool, doesn¡¯t it? Here is a question. Why and how do they squirt water like this?

A whale has one or two holes to breathe, which are called blowholes. To our surprise, the holes are located far back on the top of its head. Whales can only breathe through their blowholes.

When they are about to dive deep down into the water, they fill their lungs with air. When they come back to the surface to breathe, they expel the air with force. They blow the warm and moist air that has formed in their lungs out through their blowholes. When this air comes out, it gets combined with cool air and that forms a huge stream of vapor. It makes the whales look like they are squirting water!

Interestingly, every species of whales squirts water differently. Therefore, we can tell different whales apart by that! How about taking a closer look next time when whales are blowing water?
