The Year of the Dragon is coming to an end. Soon, we will welcome the Year of the Snake. How are you going to celebrate the New Year¡¯s Day? It is a very special day all around the world . Celebrating the New Year¡¯s Day is one of the oldest customs around the world. So, how is the New Year¡¯s Day celebrated in other countries?

Each country has its own special traditions and celebrations to welcome the New Year. In the U.S., many people throw parties to celebrate the new beginning. In Scotland, the New Year is called Hogmanay. Many Scottish villages set fire barrels of tar and rolled them down the streets. This ritual symbolizes that the old year is burnt up and the new one is allowed to enter.

In China, people celebrate this holiday for several days between January 17th and February 19th at the time of the new moon. Lanterns illuminate the streets in the country as the Chinese use thousands of lanterns to light the way for the New Year.

In Iran, New Year¡¯s Day is celebrated in March. They celebrate the beginning of the New Year according to the solar calendar. They also celebrate the beginning of spring. In Greece, children leave their shoes by the fireside on New Year¡¯s Day. They hope Saint Basil, who was famous for his kindness, will come and fill their shoes with gifts.

In Japan, everyone gets dressed in their new clothes on New Year¡¯s Day. Also, homes are decorated with pine branches and bamboo which are symbols of long life. In many European countries, families start the New Year by attending church services. Afterwards, they visit friends and relatives. In Italy, boys and girls receive gifts of money on New Year¡¯s Day.
