Did
you know that the IQ test was not used to measure each person¡¯s intellectual ability at first?
What does this mean? Let¡¯s look into the story of Alfred Binet, the
man who developed the test, to find out!
Alfred Binet was born in 1857 in France. At first he studied law.
After reading books of psychology one day, he started to bury himself
in it. When his two daughters were born in 1887, he observed them and published
several books about what he found out during his observations.
¡°Tell me about the books you have written?¡± people asked him. ¡°My
books cover the fields of experimental psychology,
developmental psychology,
educational psychology, social psychology and comparative psychology. They
are all about psychology.¡±
Binet observed
his daughters for as many as 21 years. Afterwards, he studied how
children¡¯s intellectual ability developed based on age. In 1905, he
finally created an intellectual test called the Binet-Simon test.
People were very interested in the test he created. ¡°Doctor, would
you like to explain your test?¡± ¡°It consists of several questions
to evaluate human intelligence.
Basically, I made this to identify children with mental retardation,¡± Binet
explained.
Later, after several revisions, the Binet-Simon test became widespread. However, despite
its inventor¡¯s intention, it is now recognized as the world¡¯s first
intelligent test. |
