Frozen
food is convenient and as fresh as
if we have just cooked it. This convenience is all thanks to Clarence
Birdseye (1886-1956).
Clarence Birdseye was an ordinary boy when he was
little. However, he had a habit of observing people carefully.
When he grew up, he had the chance to go on a business trip to Alaska.
He visited a family there. ¡°Have dinner with us. It will be ready
soon,¡± the family said to him. Birdseye couldn¡¯t reject their offer. ¡°Why
don¡¯t we eat the fish that we caught a month ago? It is big enough
for the three of us to eat,¡± the wife said to husband. Birdseye couldn¡¯t
believe what he had just heard. He didn¡¯t want to eat rotten fish.
¡°How
can you eat that old fish? You would die if you eat it,¡± he said.
The family all laughed at him. The family showed him the fish. ¡°Look,
this is the fish. It is as fresh as when I caught it.¡± Birdseye was
surprised. ¡°How can it be possible?¡± he asked.
When Eskimos in Alaska catch fish, they put it into a bucket.
Then, they
pour water into the bucket. The fish in the bucket quickly becomes
frozen because of the biting wind in Alaska.
¡°Oh my goodness! If people preserve food in this way,
it will remain fresh for a long time,¡± he thought.
After he observed the way the Eskimos kept their fish for a long time,
he finally created frozen food. It was an innovation in the food industry. Thanks to his invention, now we can always
enjoy fresh food! |
