Tarantula is the common name for a group of hairy and very large spiders. The name Tarantula actually comes from the name of an Italian wolf spider, which was found in Taranto, Italy.

There are about 900 kinds of Tarantula spiders in the world. These spiders are found in tropical and desert areas around the world. But the largest number of Tarantulas can be found in South America. They like to live in small burrows.

Tarantulas hunt prey in both trees and on the ground. They mainly eat insects. But they can also eat small animals. The biggest Tarantulas can kill animals as large as lizards, mice, or even birds!

Tarantulas may look dangerous, but most of them are harmless to humans. In fact, Tarantulas are beneficial creatures. They get rid of cockroaches for us!
Also, Tarantulas are generally not any more poisonous than other spiders. But their hairs can cause allergic reaction. Don¡¯t worry, here¡¯s the good news. They only prowl around at night since they are active at night.

Surprisingly, many people like Tarantulas so much that they keep them as pets. Tarantulas actually make good pets. This is because they don¡¯t make any noise. They are also very gentle and easy to take care of. And these pet spiders need very little space. Tarantulas can live for up to 20 years.
